Eating glass and the entrepreneurial mindset.

getULocal is an online platform that connects small and independently-owned shops around the city with smart buyers and travelers. We inspire people to shop more from small neighborhood shops because they can offer diversity, quality and a better shopping experience. One of the founders of the getULocal, Antonela Thoma have shared her experience on being an entrepreneur below:

“Being an entrepreneur is such an exciting journey that a lot of people envy and dream about. On the other hand, being an entrepreneur, also feels like being in a constant elevator of different moods, money, energy and engagement.

As Elon Musk put it:

“I think it’s very difficult to start companies, it’s quite painful. A friend of mine has a good phrase for doing a startup: it’s like eating glass and staring into the abyss. “

The eating glass part is because you are constantly working on the things you do not like to work, and the abyss is facing a constant imminent death of your company. As such, different serial entrepreneurs advise that if you go for it you might as well enjoy the damn journey, cos it is going to be HARD.

Personally, I can guarantee the HARD part, but I can also witness two changes in my character that I am very glad to have acquired:

  1. Having an entrepreneurial mindset means that you see an opportunity in everything that you do, some things are little spores of ideas and others are closer to a business plan.
  2. Not only that but being an entrepreneur means that you learn to deal with the ups and downs of your company in a daily basis. You know that this is the way it is, and you can choose to see the benefits of it so you can continue the fight. This is a lesson that applies in life as well. Chosing to visualize the long-term benefits and taking challenges for lessons”
